Kamal Thapa walks out after heated clash at event
Tripathi later claimed that Thapa had physically assaulted him by grabbing his neck while he was recording video footage.
KATHMANDU: Former Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) chair Kamal Thapa was forced to leave a public event in Lalitpur on Sunday after a tense confrontation broke out between him and a group of pro-monarchy youths.
Thapa was attending a discussion program titled “Vedic Sanatan Hindu Kingdom Nepal” held at Hotel Himalaya as the chief guest, organized by the Prithvi Path Foundation.
He delivered remarks in both Nepali and English without incident.
However, tensions escalated shortly after his speech when several attendees began questioning him from the audience.
Among them, a youth identified as Surendrajung Thapa, associated with Gen-Z activism, attempted to raise questions using a microphone, making a series of allegations against the former deputy prime minister.
The situation quickly deteriorated as slogans both supporting the monarchy and opposing Thapa erupted in the hall.
As the disruption intensified, Thapa stepped down from the stage and attempted to engage with the protesting group.
During the commotion, an individual filming the incident, identified as Anish Tripathi, was allegedly grabbed by Thapa in a moment of anger after what his supporters described as provocative behavior.
Tripathi later claimed that Thapa had physically assaulted him by grabbing his neck while he was recording video footage.
He also stated that he was not a journalist, but was only filming the event.
The confrontation ended without further escalation after others at the venue intervened and escorted Thapa out of the hall.
In response, RPP spokesperson Mohan Shrestha condemned the incident, calling it an act of disrespect disguised as questioning.
He added that contributions made by leaders toward the monarchy and Hindu state agenda should not be overlooked, claiming Thapa’s role has been particularly significant.
