Himalayan voters at risk: MP urges govt to ensure voting access
He urged the government to take necessary steps to ensure these citizens are not deprived of their right to vote.
KATHMANDU: CPN-UML National Assembly member Sonam Geljen Sherpa has called on the government to make arrangements for all voters in the Himalayan region to participate in the upcoming elections.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Sherpa highlighted that due to extreme cold, nearly 60 percent of voters in the high-altitude areas may be unable to cast their ballots in the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
He urged the government to take necessary steps to ensure these citizens are not deprived of their right to vote.
“It is expected that only about 30 to 40 percent of voters in the Himalayan region will be able to vote due to the cold on March 5. This could leave nearly 60 percent of the population disenfranchised. I call on the government to pay attention to this,” Sherpa said.
He also emphasized that the election should be conducted in a manner that serves the interests of all voters.
