KATHMANDU: A new hiking trail connecting Jor Ahal, Shankhamachuli, and Dimalung in Hatuwagadhi Rural Municipality, Bhojpur, has been gaining attention as a unique and attractive tourist destination.

Constructed by incorporating the naturally beautiful and historically rich Hatuwa region, the 5.5-kilometer trail is being promoted as a flagship tourism project by the rural municipality.

Chief Administrative Officer Mahesh Niraula said the trail aims to promote both domestic and international tourism while contributing to the local economy. “We’ve developed this route as a key tourism asset of the municipality. Our focus is to enhance economic opportunities through tourism,” he stated.

The trail has been declared a pride project by Hatuwagadhi Rural Municipality, according to Chairperson Prem Kumar Rai. With a concrete bridge now completed over the Dudh Koshi River, the trail lies just 65 kilometers from major towns like Dharan, Itahari, and Biratnagar — making it more accessible to visitors.

“This trail connects the municipality’s major sites and is being promoted as a short-distance trekking route,” said Chairperson Rai, adding that the trail also offers homestay options for tourists.

The region’s breathtaking green hills, open meadows, and close proximity to the Terai plains are already drawing more internal visitors. With further development, the municipality expects a sharp rise in tourist numbers.

Ward Chair of Hatuwagadhi-1, Kumar Bista, emphasized the historical significance of the trail, which passes through areas once ruled by the Kirat kings. “We are implementing a master plan that includes cultural, historical, and natural attractions of the area,” he said.

The trail’s most prominent point, Shankhamachuli Hill, stands at an altitude of 1,865 meters above sea level.

From there, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Terai plains, surrounding hills, and even the Himalayan range including Mount Everest, according to locals.
