Harka Raj Rai slams police conduct, demands action
Rai questioned the government over multiple incidents, including alleged misconduct by security forces and rising public insecurity.
KATHMANDU: Lawmaker and Shram Sanskriti Party Chair Harka Raj Rai has expressed serious concerns over the recent conduct of Nepal Police, drawing the government’s attention to issues of national sovereignty, citizen safety, and law enforcement accountability during Monday’s House of Representatives meeting.
Speaking under special time in Parliament, Rai questioned the government over multiple incidents, including alleged misconduct by security forces and rising public insecurity.
He also urged Speaker to remove what he described as a controversial statement made by Prime Minister Balen Shah from the parliamentary record, saying he was awaiting formal action on the matter.
Rai further condemned the arrest of youths protesting peacefully in the Maitighar Mandala area, including Ajoy Sodari and Birjan BK, alleging that false charges were being prepared against them. He demanded their immediate release and called on the Home Minister to ensure that patriotic citizens are not harassed.
He also raised concerns over reported incidents in the Susta region involving alleged intimidation by India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), calling it a matter of national dignity and sovereignty.
Criticizing police behavior, Rai cited allegations that students’ mobile phones were seized and destroyed, and that a poor tempo driver’s vehicle was pushed off a cliff. He described such actions as inhumane and demanded accountability and compensation for victims.
Rai warned that citizens feeling fear instead of security in the presence of police is dangerous for democracy, urging the government to ensure that law enforcement restores public trust and protects democratic values.
