KATHMANDU: The government has decided to form a high-level transport management committee to ensure safe and smooth travel for passengers during the ongoing situation and the festival season, and to promptly address complaints related to transport services.

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Keshav Kumar Sharma.

The committee will be coordinated by the Director General of the Department of Transport Management.

Key stakeholders in the committee will include representatives from the Nepal Police Headquarters, the Chief of the Highway Traffic Police Division, the Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, and the President of the National Transport Entrepreneurs Federation.

The meeting also decided to conduct technical inspections of vehicles departing from the Valley during the festival period and to establish passenger assistance desks where necessary, according to Saroj Sitoula, Senior Vice Chair of the National Transport Entrepreneurs Federation.

Additionally, the committee has requested all stakeholders, including the National Transport Entrepreneurs Federation, to facilitate smooth travel for passengers leaving Kathmandu Valley, ensuring they reach their destinations safely and efficiently.

The meeting further resolved to initiate proper compensation procedures for public vehicles and offices damaged during recent protests and to provide essential materials to traffic police through the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport and the Road Safety Council.

Finally, it was decided to issue immediate notices to prevent the transport of weapons and other items looted during the protests via vehicles.
