KATHMANDU: The government has directed all ministries, constitutional bodies, provincial offices, and government agencies to adopt strict austerity measures in public procurement and avoid purchasing new materials unless absolutely necessary.

In a circular issued on Thursday, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers instructed all federal and provincial bodies to refrain from acquiring new goods except in essential circumstances. The directive applies to ministries, commissions, secretariats, offices, and provincial chief minister and council offices across the country.

The government has urged institutions to ensure the continued operation and proper maintenance of existing resources, including equipment, tools, furniture, and vehicles, instead of procuring new items. The move aims to reduce unnecessary public expenditure and promote fiscal discipline amid growing pressure on state finances.

Officials have been asked to prioritize efficient use of available resources and discourage any non-essential procurement that could increase the financial burden on the state.
