KATHMANDU: Gianluigi Donnarumma’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been confirmed following his exclusion from the squad by head coach Luis Enrique.

The 26-year-old Italian goalkeeper, who played a pivotal role in securing PSG’s first-ever UEFA Champions League title last season, was notably left out of the team for the upcoming French Super Cup, signaling the end of his tenure at the club.

Donnarumma joined PSG in 2021 and quickly established himself as one of the world’s premier goalkeepers, delivering exceptional performances during the club’s treble-winning campaign.

However, with the recent signing of French goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier on Saturday, speculation over Donnarumma’s future intensified. Despite having one year remaining on his contract, the goalkeeper is reportedly ready to move on.

Taking to social media on Tuesday, Donnarumma expressed his disappointment, writing, “Unfortunately, a decision has been made that I am no longer part of the team to help push the squad forward. I am sad and disappointed.”

Coach Luis Enrique addressed Donnarumma’s absence ahead of PSG’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, saying, “These decisions are always difficult. I can only speak highly of Gianluigi Donnarumma. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and an even better person. But we are looking for a different type of goalkeeper.”

He added, “We appreciate his contributions to the club at the level he has given, but my objective is to improve the team, and I have made my decision accordingly.”

As of now, Donnarumma’s next club remains undecided. The goalkeeper has expressed hope to have a proper farewell with PSG supporters before his exit.
