KATHMANDU: The Gen Z led movement in Nepal has reached a dangerous flashpoint after protesters set fire to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s private residence in Balkot on Tuesday.

According to eyewitnesses, demonstrators marched toward the residence despite security barricades.

Police attempted to block the crowd with force and tear gas, but the mob overran security lines, vandalized the premises, and eventually set parts of the compound ablaze.

The incident in Balkot has triggered a new wave of violence across the country.

Reports indicate similar attacks and arson targeting government offices and political leaders’ private properties in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Jhapa, and Dhangadhi.

The Gen Z protests, initially sparked by anger over corruption, political elites’ lavish lifestyles, and restrictions on social media, have spiraled into widespread unrest.

Security forces remain deployed in large numbers, but authorities appear to be struggling to contain the intensifying movement.
