KATHMANDU: Nepal observed Martyrs’ Day with commemorative programs held across the country, honoring the known and unknown heroes who sacrificed their lives for democracy and national freedom.

The main ceremony took place at Shahid Park (Martyrs’ Memorial) in Lainchaur, Kathmandu, where floral tributes and wreaths were laid in remembrance of the martyrs.

The solemn event was attended by Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut, members of the interim government, and senior state officials, who paid their respects through a formal tribute ceremony.

Martyrs’ Day is observed to honor those who gave their lives during the Rana era and subsequent democratic movements in the struggle for the establishment and restoration of democracy in Nepal.

The day commemorates iconic martyrs such as Shukraraj Shastri, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand, Gangalal Shrestha, among many others whose sacrifices laid the foundation for democratic rights in the country.

As part of the annual observance, Martyrs’ Week is marked from Magh 10 to Magh 16, featuring various programs nationwide to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and the cost paid for freedom.

Speakers at today’s ceremony reiterated a collective pledge to uphold the ideals for which the martyrs fought, emphasizing national unity, democratic values, and the responsibility of citizens and institutions to safeguard democracy in their honor.
