Five killed, 33 injured in bus accident

KATHMANDU: The death toll from a bus accident on the Jarsingpauwa–Sankhu road section at Lapsiphedi, Shankharapur Municipality–3, Kathmandu, has risen to five.

The accident occurred on Wednesday evening as a bus returning from a picnic met with an accident.

The bus, bearing registration number Ba 4 Kha 8788, was carrying a team from Nature House and Herb International Company.

According to police, 33 people were injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu District Police Range spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Pawan Bhattarai said that around 60-year-old Arjun Lamichhane of Gokarneshwar Municipality–5, Jorpati, who was critically injured in the accident, died during treatment at around 12:30 am last night, taking the death toll to five.

Earlier, four people—three women and one man—had died either at the scene or during treatment.

The deceased have been identified as 49-year-old Kamana Sharma of Banke (currently residing in Budhanilkantha), 51-year-old Indira Limbu of Taplejung (Budhanilkantha–7), 55-year-old Shanti Gupta of Siraha (currently living in Pepsi Cola area), and 65-year-old Devendra Limbu of Panchthar (currently residing in Gothatar).

Police said an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, while priority has been given to the treatment of the injured.
