FIFA 2026: USA thrash Paraguay 4-1

KATHMANDU: Host nation the United States kicked off its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in their Group Stage opener at SoFi Stadium on Saturday.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Americans took control from the outset and grabbed an early lead in the seventh minute when Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla inadvertently turned Weston McKennie’s cross into his own net.

The United States continued to dominate proceedings, with striker Folarin Balogun emerging as the standout performer.

Although one of his goals was ruled out for offside, the forward responded brilliantly by scoring twice — first in the 31st minute and again in first-half stoppage time — to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 advantage at the break.

Paraguay attempted a comeback in the second half and reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute through Mauricio.

However, any hopes of a revival were dashed late in the match when Giovanni Reyna produced a composed finish to score the Americans’ fourth goal and seal a convincing victory.
