EVs imports decline in Nepal, petrol cars see sharp rise
During the review period, EV imports worth around Rs 16.66 billion entered the country, generating approximately Rs 10.11 billion in government revenue.
KATHMANDU: Imports of electric vehicles (EVs) in Nepal have declined during the first nine months of the current fiscal year 2082/83, showing a fall of nearly 10 percent compared to the same period last year.
According to customs data, 7,967 units of electric cars were imported in the first nine months of the previous fiscal year, while the number dropped to 7,173 units this year.
During the review period, EV imports worth around Rs 16.66 billion entered the country, generating approximately Rs 10.11 billion in government revenue.
In terms of categories, 2,506 units of EVs under 50 kW, 4,083 units in the 51–100 kW range, 574 units in the 101–200 kW range, and 8 units above 201 kW were imported.
In contrast, petrol-powered vehicle imports have surged significantly.
A total of 4,140 petrol cars were imported in the same period, marking a 50.99 percent increase compared to 2,742 units imported in the previous year.
The rise in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles comes amid growing demand in the market, raising concerns as fuel dependency increases at a time when energy challenges continue to persist in the country.
