Dangi urges use of Nepali wood in Parliament furniture
Dangi recalled that she had earlier questioned the then-Speaker about whether the chair used by the Speaker was made from imported wood.
KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Nisha Dangi has urged the government to prioritize the use of domestically produced timber in the furniture used inside the federal parliament building.
Speaking during a session of the House of Representatives, Dangi recalled that she had earlier questioned the then-Speaker about whether the chair used by the Speaker was made from imported wood.
“I had asked the then-Speaker which country the wood used in the Speaker’s chair was imported from. I want to repeat the same question again,” she said, stressing that similar concerns remain relevant as the country prepares to move into a new parliamentary building.
She further questioned the origin of the materials used in furniture for lawmakers and the Speaker in the upcoming facility.
Dangi also cited findings from the Office of the Auditor General’s 61st annual report, which highlighted that Nepal is failing to properly utilize its domestic timber resources, leading to imports worth billions of rupees annually in wood-based products.
Expressing dissatisfaction with current procurement practices, she criticized policies that, according to her, make it difficult to process domestic timber usage while allowing smooth issuance of letters of credit (LC) for imported wood.
