Betana Wetland emerges as eastern Nepal tourism hotspot
Located 16 km east of Itahari Chowk in Sunsari, along the East-West Highway in Belbari, Morang, the wetland is surrounded by dense greenery, offering an ideal escape for nature lovers.
KATHMANDU: Betana Wetland, known for its natural beauty, has become a popular destination for domestic tourists.
During winter, around 500 visitors explore the wetland daily, enjoying its scenic views, cold waters, and fresh air, while spotting migratory birds from Siberia, turtles, fish, crocodiles, and deer.
Located 16 km east of Itahari Chowk in Sunsari, along the East-West Highway in Belbari, Morang, the wetland is surrounded by dense greenery, offering an ideal escape for nature lovers.
Shambhu Bhattarai, President of the Betana Wetland Community Forest User Group, said the site attracts tourists for its serene environment and wildlife.
Pedal boats are available for boating, and a Rs 2 million water fountain is under construction with support from the Koshi Province Government’s Ministry of Tourism, Forests, and Environment.
Covering about 65 bighas, the wetland hosts 25 rare bird species and critically endangered ‘Black Softshell’ turtles, while the community forest group actively conserves local flora and fauna.

Biologists have also started visiting for wildlife research.
Dil Prasad Rai, head of Belbari Municipality, said efforts are underway to develop Betana Wetland into a major tourist attraction in eastern Nepal.
