KATHMANDU: Police in southern Nepal have arrested another man in connection with the killing of a mother and her adult son in Bara district, as investigations into the attack continue.

The victims, 52-year-old Sumitra Devi and her 32-year-old son Rameshwar Mandal, were found dead early Wednesday morning in Parwanipur Rural Municipality-1. According to police, the attack took place shortly before 2 a.m.

Bara District Police Chief Superintendent Narendra Kunwar said the newly arrested suspect, identified as Dharmendra Mahato, was taken into custody after evidence linked him to the incident. Police have begun further questioning to determine his exact role.

Earlier, officers had detained Sumitra Devi’s daughter-in-law and Rameshwar’s wife, 28-year-old Manita Devi, as part of the investigation.

Police say an unidentified individual entered the house at night and carried out the attack using a sharp weapon. At the time, eight members of the family were inside the house.

Sumitra Devi was killed outside the house near a toilet, where her body was later found. Her son Rameshwar was found dead inside the house. Three other family members—Sumitra’s husband Jagruk Mandal, her daughter Kiran Devi, and Manita Devi—were injured in the incident. Jagruk Mandal is reported to be in serious condition.

All the injured are receiving treatment at a local neuro hospital in Parwanipur, police said.

District Police spokesperson Deputy Superintendent Vijayraj Pandit stated that Manita Devi sustained minor injuries, while investigations are ongoing to establish the full sequence of events and motive behind the killings.

Authorities say more arrests are possible as the inquiry progresses.
