African Swine Fever kills 36 pigs in Barahakshetra

KATHMANDU: An outbreak of African Swine Fever has killed 36 pigs in Barahakshetra Municipality, according to veterinary authorities.

Dr. Manoj Kumar Mahato, Chief of the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Expert Center, Inaruwa, confirmed the infection in pigs being reared commercially by local farmers.

At the Diyali Agriculture Farm in Barahakshetra-1, the virus has infected 20 pigs, of which 17 have died.

Similarly, 15 pigs have been infected at the Barah Pig Farm, with 7 deaths reported. Another farm owned by local resident Subash Shrestha has seen 22 infections and 12 fatalities.

In total, Barahakshetra alone has reported 36 pig deaths and 57 infections from the African Swine Fever virus, Dr. Mahato said.

The virus had previously been detected in Duhabi, Ramdhuni, and Dharan areas of Sunsari.

Eastern Sugar Mills Crushes Over 1.2 Million Quintals of Sugarcane

Sunsari, Nepal — Eastern Sugar Mills, located in Barju Rural Municipality, has crushed more than 1.28 million quintals of sugarcane in the current fiscal year, excluding seed cane.

According to General Manager Pawan Kumar Jha, the mill processed a total of 1,280,638.49 quintals of sugarcane.

Barju Rural Municipality contributed the highest volume, while Ramdhuni Municipality recorded the least.

Barju supplied 669,587.5 quintals, whereas Ramdhuni provided just 1,010.33 quintals.

As per official data, sugarcane is cultivated on 4,693.71 bighas of land across Sunsari district.
