KATHMANDU: Acting Chief Justice Sapana Malla Pradhan has applied for a 20-day leave following the appointment of Dr. Manoj Sharma as the new Chief Justice of Nepal.
She submitted the leave application today, requesting it to be effective immediately.
Pradhan, who was in line for the Chief Justice position based on seniority, is understood to be dissatisfied after the Constitutional Council recommended Sharma for the post.
However, sources indicate that she has not resigned and is not planning to step down from her position.
She was absent from the oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Justice. Reports also confirm that she did not attend the assumption of office event held at the Supreme Court last night.
Meanwhile, senior justices Kumar Regmi and Hari Phuyal, who are also senior to Sharma, attended the ceremony and welcomed the new Chief Justice, with both of them scheduled to sit in court today.
Pradhan’s leave request has not yet been approved. The final decision now rests with Chief Justice Dr. Manoj Sharma.
