KATHMANDU: So far in the current fiscal year, 2,088 road accidents have claimed the lives of 69 people, authorities have reported.

The information was shared during a road accident reduction awareness volunteer program held on Friday to mark International Volunteer Day.

According to the police, 10,675 accidents occurred in FY 2079–080, 8,881 in FY 2080–081, and 7,169 in FY 2081–082.

While the total number of road accidents has been gradually decreasing each year, the fatality rate has increased.

Speaking at the program, Chief Inspector Naresh Raj Subedi, Information Officer at Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police, said that fatalities have risen by 7.34 percent.

He noted that most accidents occur due to driver negligence, including speeding, careless driving, substance use, ignoring traffic rules, overloading vehicles, and poor vehicle maintenance.

Mechanical failures and improper management of old vehicles have also contributed to accidents.

The police data shows that accidents are more frequent on Fridays and Wednesdays and during the months of Magh and Falgun (mid-January to mid-March).

Two-wheeler vehicles are involved in most accidents.

Subedi emphasized that the rise in fatalities despite the declining number of accidents is concerning and calls for increased awareness and caution.

He also mentioned that night-time accidents have been on the rise, prompting the traffic police across the Kathmandu Valley to implement strict speed reduction measures.

Additionally, he highlighted ongoing challenges caused by previous damage to police offices due to the “Gen-Z” movement.
