KATHMANDU: Police in Salyan have recovered 33 illegal firearms hidden across the district in Mangsri, raising concerns over potential misuse during elections.
The Salyan District Police initiated the search following a departmental circular warning that locally concealed weapons could be misused during the electoral period.
At a Wednesday press briefing, police officials revealed that the firearms were seized from multiple locations: 15 from Bangad Kupinde Municipality wards 10, 11, and 12; 10 from Triveni Rural Municipality–1, Kavre; and 8 from other areas, totaling 33 unlicensed guns.
Police Chief Dr. Hem Bahadur KC confirmed that none of the recovered firearms had legal licenses.
He added that the weapons were hidden in abandoned houses, slopes, and forested areas, and their owners remain unidentified.
Authorities suspect some of the guns were being used for hunting wild animals.
While one individual was arrested in connection with the firearms, they have since been released on bail.
Police warned that more illegal firearms could still be hidden in the district, and searches are ongoing.
The recovered guns are slated to be transferred to the provincial police office.
