KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has announced a significant rise in rice production this year compared to the previous year.

In a press release issued today, the ministry highlighted that the total rice production for the current fiscal year is estimated to reach 5.95 million metric tons, reflecting an increase of 4.04% compared to last year.

While the area planted with rice has decreased, positive gains in productivity have led to an overall increase in production.

The ministry’s report estimates that rice has been planted on a total of 1.42 million hectares this fiscal year, which is a 1.28% reduction compared to the previous year.

However, average productivity has reached a record high of 4.19 metric tons per hectare.

The early onset of the monsoon, arriving three days ahead of average, along with sufficient rainfall, has contributed to the increase in production.

Additionally, timely access to chemical fertilizers and quality seeds has also played a role in boosting output, according to the ministry.

Regionally, provinces such as Koshi, Madhesh, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim have witnessed an increase in rice production, while the remaining three provinces have seen a decline.

The ministry noted that rice planting area in Rukum (West) has decreased compared to last year, contributing to a decrease in overall production in Karnali Province.

In Nawalparasi (East), issues such as rice panicle failure have led to reduced production, while in Lamjung, adjustments to rice planting areas have resulted in a decrease in both planted area and production.
