KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has reported that flooding and landslides across the country have resulted in 218 fatalities, 27 missing persons, and 143 injuries.

He clarified that the government is prioritizing disaster response efforts in the aftermath of these events.

During a meeting of the House of Representatives’ State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, he stated that the government is focused on locating and rescuing affected citizens and providing relief.

Lekhak highlighted that free medical treatment is being offered to the injured, and efforts are underway to restore access on major and auxiliary highways that have been blocked due to landslides.

“Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and the distribution of relief materials is also in progress. Injured individuals are receiving free treatment at government hospitals. The District Disaster Management Committees are actively engaged in effective mobilization of relief materials and rehabilitation,” he said.

He further mentioned that heavy rainfall, occurring for the first time in fifty years, has severely affected the Kathmandu Valley and Bagmati State.

The Minister reported that the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and volunteers have rescued 4,022 individuals stranded by the disaster.

In total, 3,906 personnel from the Nepal Army, 14,802 from Nepal Police, and 12,023 from the Armed Police have been deployed for search and rescue operations in the aftermath of the floods and landslides.
