KATHMANDU: Gitedra Babu (GB) Rai has disappeared after allegedly embezzling billions of rupees from cooperatives across Nepal.

He is accused of misappropriating funds from cooperatives involving thousands of ordinary people.

There has long been suspicion that GB Rai is hiding abroad after fleeing with the savings of cooperative members. However, the police have not provided concrete information about his whereabouts.

Nepal’s parliament, parliamentary committees, and law enforcement agencies are investigating the financial mismanagement carried out by GB Rai. Yet, no official information has been released about where he is or what he is doing.

Nepal Police have been actively searching for him. A police team even traveled to Malaysia to conduct an investigation. The team has now returned to Nepal after conducting inquiries about GB Rai in Malaysia.

The police source confirmed that the team, which went to Malaysia a week ago, returned to Nepal on Wednesday. However, it remains unclear whether they were able to locate GB Rai during their investigation.

According to sources, GB Rai is believed to have purchased an apartment in Malaysia. It is reported that he bought an apartment worth over 70 million Nepali rupees in Desapandan, Kuala Lumpur.

There are also claims that GB Rai has invested over 1 billion rupees from the embezzled cooperative funds in Malaysia.
