KATHMANDU: Nepal Army teams have recovered two more bodies from the mountains, including one from Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak.
One body was found at an altitude of 8,420 meters on Mount Everest, while the other was located at 7,900 meters on Mount Lhotse, the world’s fourth-highest peak.
The bodies have been transferred to the forensic lab at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, according to an army statement.
Previously, on May 16, the teams retrieved two other bodies and skeletal remains from the same peaks.
Alongside the recoveries, they have collected 11,000 kg of waste since the operation began on April 11.
The Nepal Army deployed three teams to clean Mount Everest (8,848 meters), Mount Lhotse (8,516 meters), and Mount Nuptse (7,861 meters) with the help of Nepali Sherpa climbers.
The initiative aims to collect 10 tons of waste and recover five bodies by the campaign’s end on June 5.
The Nepal Army first started its mountain cleanup missions in 2019 but paused the effort in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
