By-election in Ilam and Bajhang begins, to continue till 5 pm

KATHMANDU: By-election begins in Ilam and Bajhang.

Voting started at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm.

The by-election is has started for the member to the House of Representatives in Ilam Constituency-2 and State Assembly member in Bajhang Constituency-1 (A).

The Election Commission urged all voters to exercise their voting rights without fear.

It is said that 651 employees and 1,200 security personnel have been mobilized for the by-election.

There are 161,889 voters in Ilam and 79 polling stations and 149 polling centres have been designated.

The by-election is taking place in these two constituencies after the two posts had remained vacant following the death of HoR member Subas Nembang and State Assembly member Prithivi Bahadur Singh.

Subas Nembang of the CPN (UML), elected from Ilam-2, died from heart attack on Sept 12, 2023 while Prithvi Bahadur Singh of the Nepali Congress, elected from Bajhang-1(A) in a road accident on July 10, 2023.

A total of 19 candidates including Suhang Rai of the CPN (UML), Damber Khadka of the Nepali Congress and Milan Limbu of the Rastriya Swatantra Party are contesting in Ilam by-election while 12 candidates in Bajhang including Abhishek Bahadur Singh of the Nepali Congress, Daman Bhandari of the CPN (UML), Janak Budha of the CPN (Maoist Centre) and Dil Bahadur Singh of the CPN (Unified Socialist).
