Qatari Emir arrives in Kathmandu, grand welcome (photos)

KATHMANDU: This afternoon, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of a two-day official visit.

He was graciously invited by President Ram Chandra Poudel.

Upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the President welcomed him in a highly distinguished lounge.

Also present for the welcome were Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Speaker of the House Devraj Ghimire, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha, along with other high-ranking officials.

Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth, among other high-ranking officials and diplomatic representatives, were present to welcome the Emir of Qatar.

Having concluded his official visit to Bangladesh, the Amir arrived in Kathmandu this afternoon via a special aircraft. On this occasion, a contingent of the Nepali Army, along with a 21-gun salute, honored the Emir.

Later today, the Amir is scheduled to hold discussions with President Poudel at the Sheetal Niwas Presidential Residence.

In recognition of the Emir’s visit, President Poudel will host a state banquet.

During the visit, cooperation in various fields such as youth affairs, sports, education, scientific research, and others will be discussed, emphasizing mutual understanding and collaboration between Nepal and Qatar.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Qatar on Jan 21, 1977, this marks the first official visit of the Qatari Emir to Nepal.

Nepal established its embassy in Doha on July 11, 2000, while Qatar established its embassy in Kathmandu in August 2011.
