KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma has said that with the development of the changing society, senior citizens are becoming isolated in recent times.

Addressing an event held Thursday at the Senior Citizens Concern Centre in Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan-16 Teraunte, in Dang district, Minister Sharma said that the work being done by the centre for senior citizens is very effective and praiseworthy. She emphasized that it should be carried out more systematically in the days to come.

On the occasion, Minister Sharma opined that the services given by the Centre to the senior citizens who are isolated from their families due to busy schedule have made their lives very easy.

In some cases, due to busy work and responsibilities, even one family has to live separately and because of it senior citizens are lonely, she added.

Although it is the responsibility of the family to nurture and care for the elderly, she mentioned that in recent times there have been cases of discrimination and abandonment in ashrams (elderly home).

Minister said that in the recent generation, there has been an increase in problems in fulfilling the duties of parents, stressing that all agencies of the state should pay attention to moral education and awareness of responsibility towards parents in the young generation.

Minister Sharma said that she will try her best to build the park at the Senior Citizens Concern Centre and other necessary initiatives for the construction of physical structures.
