KATHMANDU: A government-appointed high-level investigative commission has recently interrogated former Speaker of Parliament, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, as part of its probe into the gold smuggling case.

Mahara was questioned about his alleged involvement in a gold smuggling scheme facilitated through electronic cigarettes, commonly referred to as vape devices.

Previous revelations indicated that Mahara had admitted to the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) that he made a phone call to a customs officer at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), requesting the release of vape devices imported by a Chinese national from Dubai.

These same items were later found to have been used in the smuggling of gold.

Additionally, Mahara has publicly acknowledged his acquaintance with the Chinese individual implicated in the smuggling activity on several occasions.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are continuing to scrutinize Mahara’s role and any potential links to the illegal gold smuggling operation.
