KATHMANDU: Dr. Shekhar Koirala, the Nepali Congress leader, has stated that revolt and opposition against wrongdoing are vital.

Speaking at a Krishna Prasad Koirala Memorial Council event in Biratnagar on Tuesday, he stated that if authorities or rulers are doing wrong, as BP Koirala suggested, there should be revolt and dissent.

He recalled Krishna Prasad Koirala, saying, “During the Rana period, Krishna Prasad Koirala sent Chandra Shumsher a torn daura suruwal and a topi.” It was an example of dissent or revolt. The message was that money alone is insufficient, and something must be done to help society. That is why I believe that if we are doing anything wrong, dissent and revolt are required.

Dr. Koirala stated that the people’s movement of 2062-063 was also a revolt as a result of the then-King Gyanendra’s wrongdoing, and that it is vital to convey the constitution and federal republic acquired via the people’s movement to the people’s homes.

Federalism does not imply a centralized government. It indicates that the rights guaranteed by federalism or the constitution should be brought to people’s homes. Governance needs to be maintained. However, corruption and impunity have risen in Nepal. No one is accountable, and there is no transparency.” Koirala continued, “Democracy does not occur just because the republic is wonderful. We must be able to improve the republic.

Pointing out that economic, social and religious things are not going well, Dr. Koirala said that the government has not been able to speed up development. He was angry that the behavior of the banks and the speed of development was not right.

Former Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha was awarded ‘Pitaji Krishna Prasad Koirala Memorial Award 2080’ in the program.

Morang Congress Vice Chair Bhakti Majhi, Biratnagar Metropolitan Mayor Nagesh Koirala,CPN (Unified Socialist) Politburo Member Mahesh Regmi, Chief District Officer Prem Bhattarai, Former President of the District Development Committee Yogendra Adhikari, and International Chamber of Commerce General Secretary Naresh Shrestha were among the attendees in the program.
