KATHMANDU: A case has been filed against 4 people, including Rahul Mahara, the son of former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara, on charges of organized crime and customs evasion.

The District Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kathmandu filed a case on Wednesday against Lokendra Paudel, an aide of Chinese smugglers, along with Rahul, Dawa Chhiring, who is currently in prison in the 61 kg gold smuggling case, and Nima Gurung of Kavre, according to the office’s chief co-prosecutor Achyutamani Neupane.

On Friday, the police Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) completed an investigation and presented a report with comments to the public prosecutor’s office about the accusation of smuggling approximately 9 kg of gold hidden in electronic cigarettes (Vape).

The case was filed by the public prosecutor’s office, according to CIB’s findings. The case filed against them encompasses three distinct offenses: criminal treachery, customs evasion, and organized crime-related charges.

The exposure of this smuggling operation followed the theft of gold worth Rs 85.55 million and 28 thousand 374 rupees from the customs office.

The defendants have received sentences ranging from 3 to 5 years in prison, depending on the severity of the offense.

The airport customs office seized the gold brought from Dubai by Chinese smugglers on 10 Poush 2079. After it was found that vape was brought in suspiciously, the goods were taken into custody and kept sealed in the warehouse. But the vape was stolen when it was sealed. While investigating it, it was found that gold was found in the vape.

Six Chinese smugglers, including Daojin Wang, who brought the gold, are absconding. They have been put on the wanted list so that action will be taken when they are arrested.
