KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has decided to take action if schools are shuttered in the guise of a teachers’ strike.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the proposed school education bill, government teachers have announced school closures since Thursday.

However, the Metropolitan Municipality has concluded that closing the school is unacceptable.

According to Naveen Maharjan, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Corporation, Kathmandu Metropolitan City likewise opposes the School Education Act.

“However, closing the school and expressing dissatisfaction is not acceptable; we also have differing legal opinions,” he explained. “However, closing the school does not solve the problem; only the children’s education is affected.”

If the school is closed, the city has decided to punish the principal and instructors who do not attend class. He stated that any behavior that is contradictory to the specified behavior will be discouraged.

“We will monitor the school tomorrow,” Manandhar said, adding that “if the school is closed and there is no education, action will be taken against the culprits.”
