TOKYO: Four deaths were confirmed Friday following a stabbing and shooting incident on Thursday involving a man armed with a hunting rifle in Japan’s central prefecture of Nagano, local media reported.

The male suspect, who was confirmed to be the son of the local assembly speaker, was taken in custody by the police on Friday morning on suspicion of murder, according to local police.

At around 4:25 p.m. local time (0725 GMT) Thursday, local police received an emergency call about the man stabbing a woman in the city of Nakano.

The police officers who rushed to the scene were shot, according to local police, who later confirmed the three dead.
