KATHMANDU: The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has announced the implementation of the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) starting from May 15, 2023.

This move aims to effectively manage and regulate the use of mobile phones in Nepal, ensuring better control over unauthorized mobile phone entry into the country.

According to a notice made by the Nepal Government Ministry of Finance – Custom Department on May 13, 2023, the MDMS system will be mandatory for all mobile sets used in Nepal. Passengers flying to Nepal from overseas will be permitted to bring up to two mobile handsets beginning Monday, May 15, 2023.

The MDMS system, a high-tech solution, has been introduced to prevent illicit mobile sales and distribution while also bringing them within the revenue range. The introduction of the MDMS intends to resolve concerns about foreign exchange reserves and income declines caused by unlawful mobile phone import channels.

Individuals can register mobile sets brought for business purposes in the MDMS themselves under the “Private Use Goods Order 2077” issued by the Nepal Government. Furthermore, mobile phones brought from overseas for commercial usage with customs clearance will be registered in the MDMS system as soon as possible. Individuals can check mdms.nta.gov.np to see if a newly purchased mobile phone is registered in the system.

Registration in the MDMS system for personal use mobile phones will be carried out by entering the passport or citizenship details together with the passport page or boarding pass papers indicating the arrival/departure stamp. The use of MDMS seeks not only to protect customers from fraudulent practices, but also to protect revenue and support genuine firms in the mobile retail sector.
