KATHMANDU: Mobile phones without customs declaration will not work from today.

With the implementation of the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) by the Nepal Telecommunication Authority today from Dec 30, the mobile sets brought without a customs clearance will not work.

The authority has implemented MDMS to further organize, track, and block stolen and lost mobile sets in order to discourage the illegal import, sale, distribution, and use of mobile sets.

According to the authority, approximately 40% of mobile phones are currently being used illegally, which is harming the government, businessmen, and consumers.

Similarly, when returning from abroad with two mobile phones, you must now pass through the airport customs check only after paying the customs.

If you attempt to bring more than two mobile phones, they will be confiscated. Even if the mobile is somehow tricked into the phone, after 15 days of inserting the SIM into the mobile set, it is not possible to make calls or send messages from it.
