KATHMANDU: Charles Sobhraj, a French citizen, was released on Friday after serving 19 years, 3 months, and 7 days in the Central Jail.

The Supreme Court (SC) ordered his release after he murdered two people and attempted to murder another in Nepal.

The SC had ordered to release him who had killed two people and attempted to kill one in Nepal.

Sobhraj was sentenced to 20 years in prison from 2060 Ashoj 2 (19 Sept, 2003), to 2080 Ashoj 1 (18 Sept, 2023), by the Bhaktapur District Court. Sobhraj was released after serving 9 months in prison for senior citizens.

As the 78-year-old Sobhraj, who is serving a sentence in the case of duty-bound death, needs open heart surgery due to heart disease, the SC ordered his release from prison under the provisions of Rule 29 (2A) of the Prison Regulations, 2020, which allows prisoners who reach the age of 65 to reduce their prison sentences by up to 75%.

He was taken to the Immigration Department to begin the process of returning him to his homeland.

After preparing the passport and travel documents, the immigration department will regularize the visa and fine him based on the immigration offense.

After paying the fine, there is a provision in the immigration regulations that allows him to be expelled by a Home Secretary level decision, preventing him from returning to Nepal for a specified number of years.
