Portugal qualifies for knockout with revenge against Uruguay

KATHMANDU: Portugal has reached the knockout stage, taking revenge for the defeat four years ago. Defeated Uruguay 2-0 on Saturday night and secured the last 16.

Bruno Fernandes scored both goals in Portugal’s victory. Portugal became the third team to enter the knockout stage of the Qatar World Cup. In the 54th minute of the game, Fernandes’s shot from outside the box was gave a lead for Portugal.

Portugal scored another penalty goal after leading 1-0. Fernandes did not squander the penalty opportunity in the second half’s extra time. With the assistance of VAR, the referee awarded a penalty after the Uruguayan player’s hand ball inside the penalty area.

Although Uruguay lost to Portugal, the possibility of advancing to the previous round remains. Portugal was eliminated from the last 16 earlier this year after losing to Uruguay.
