KATHMANDU: Tulja i.e. Taleju Bhawani Temple, which has an interesting history, is open to the general public only on Dahsain Mahanavami. After the Kota Parva, 54 snakes and 54 goats were sacrificed in the Taleju temple.

On behalf of the Government of Nepal, 54 buffalo and 54 goats are sacrificed at Taleju Bhawani each Dashain. People of rank used to enter Taleju Bhawani through the doors on its four corners in the past.

According to this, only the king of Kathmandu, nobles from the north, kings of Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, and Kirtipur from the east, and commoners from the west were permitted to enter.

The Newar people revere Taleju Bhawani as their beloved deity. Tulja, Taleju, Turja, Taleji, and other names are used to worship Taleju Bhawani. Also revered as a goddess or mother force, Tulja Bhawani.

Tulja Bhawani was brought to Nepal from India by the Karnat ruler Harihat Singh Dev, according to legend. This temple was later developed by the Malla monarchs as a personal place of devotion. Hanumandhoka’s three-story Taleju temple is 120 feet tall.

Bhawani is brought from the temple to Hanuman Dhoka’s palace’s central square on the day of Saptami. After being worshipped all day on Navami, Bhawani is brought back to the temple from Mul Chowk and made accessible to the public.
