The prison holds three times its maximum capacity.
KATHMANDU: The Banke District Prison in Nepalgunj has more inmates than it can house. As a result, inmates’ safety concerns and challenges are growing.
The prison holds three times its maximum capacity. According to Jailer Ram Kumar Sundar, the Department of Prisons has set a capacity of 300 inmates, but it currently holds 776 inmates.
Furthermore, as the prison is located in the middle of a human settlement, security is a major concern. The prison’s physical infrastructure is also deteriorating.
In addition, the prison lacks proper drainage and sewage management system. According to the prison administration, poor sanitation causes a large number of inmates to become ill.
It has also become difficult for the security personnel assigned to the prisoners’ safety.
