A successful Liver Transplant takes place at Chitwan Medical College
CHITWAN: JULY 15 – At Chitwan Medical College, a 47-year-old man successfully underwent a liver transplant. The transplant on Bharat Bikram Shahi of Kushe Rural Municipality-9 in Jajarkot district took eight hours, according to Pratap Devkota, executive director of the CMC hospital, at a press conference here today.
Dr. Sanjaya Kumar Yadav, Dr. Ekananda Singh, Dr. Jayanta Kumar Shah, Dr. Sagar Poudel, Dr. Barun Shrestha, Dr. Kiran Adhikari, Dr. Nabin Yadav, Dr. Suresh Gautam, Dr. Birendra Raut, Dr. Dipak Adhikari, and Dr. Subash Ojha led the transplant team. The transplant was also carried out by a team of specialist surgeons from India’s Apollo Hospital.
According to director Devkota, the patient had cirrhosis, a late-stage liver disease. Shahi’s wife, Kamala Devi, donated 60% of her liver to her husband. “It would have been difficult for Shahi to survive if the transplant had not been performed because he had advanced liver disease,” Dr. Yadav explained.
Before being admitted to the hospital two weeks ago, Shahi had been treated at several hospitals in Kathmandu, but to no avail. “His liver was damaged as a result of his excessive alcohol consumption. He had also been diagnosed with hepatitis B. And his stomach was overflowing with fluids,” he explained.
Donor Kamala Devi was discharged from the hospital on July 11 after her health improved, he said, adding that both of them are doing well.
“If his recovery continues at this rate, Shahi will be discharged next week.” In two to three months, their livers will have grown by 90 to 95 percent. After that, both of them will be able to live normal lives,” he explained.
Previously, a Kathmandu liver patient had a liver transplant in a hospital successfully.
At least 15 liver patients have been received in the hospital daily, 10 to 20% of which are required for liver transplants.
