EGYPT: TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 2021 – Engineers have succeeded in moving the container carrier ‘Evergreen’ , which is stuck in Egypt’s Suez Canal. Evergreen is said to have been straightened using 10 tugboats. Dredgers were used to remove soil from the wreckage last night.

They removed about 27,000 cubic meters of sand and soil. The ship’s operator, Shoi Kisen Kaisha Limited, said there was no damage to the ship and the engine was working well. The ship, which had the Panamanian flag but was owned by Japan, was carrying goods from Asia to Europe. However, it is not clear when the canal will open.

Six days ago, 12 percent of the world’s trade was disrupted by ships stranded on the route. Transportation of many items from crude oil was stopped. At least 367 ships plying the canal daily were stopped.

If this route is not used, ships will have to travel a distance of about 5,000 kilometers on a detour to the African continent. The giant Evergreen is about 400 meters long and weighs 220,000 tons. About 20,000 containers had to be unloaded to bring the ship back into the water.
