Nepal is being declared self-sufficient in powdered milk, butter, meat and eggs
KATHMANDU: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24, 2021 – The government is set to declare self-sufficiency in some livestock products. It is preparing to declare that Nepal is self-sufficient in powdered milk, butter, meat and eggs. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development is organizing a function at the Nepal Administrative Training Institute, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur on Thursday to announce the self-reliance of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in the livestock production.
According to the Ministry, Nepal has recently started producing powdered milk, poultry and goat meat, butter and eggs more than its annual consumption. The ministry has also claimed that the import of livestock products of these commodities has dropped to zero in Nepal at present.
According to the ministry, only 3,000 metric tonnes of powdered milk is required in Nepal at present, but the production is 3,450 metric tonnes. The ministry has set a target of producing 5,000 metric tonnes of powdered milk annually. Similarly, 1,200 metric tonnes of butter has been produced and consumed.
Similarly, 450,000 metric tons of meat is produced annually. Of this, 46 percent is chicken meat. One million kg of chicken meat is consumed daily. Similarly, Nepal has become self-sufficient in goat meat.
Similarly, 1.4 billion eggs are produced annually. On this basis, currently 54 eggs are consumed per capita in Nepal annually. The ministry aims to increase per capita egg consumption to 100 pieces.
Similarly, Prime Minister Oli is also scheduled to unveil a separate logo for milk trucks at the same function. The ministry has stated that the logo will be distributed so that milk transportation will not be disrupted in any case.
