KATHMANDU: Two young men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 71-year-old woman in Shailyashikhar Municipality–8, Deval, in Darchula.

According to police, the victim, Laxmi Joshi, was found dead inside her home on Monday night.

Preliminary investigations indicate that she was killed and her jewellery looted.

The arrested individuals have been identified as 23-year-old Umesh Saud, a tractor driver and local resident of Shailyashikhar–8, and 23-year-old Gopal Nath of Baitadi.

Information about the arrests was confirmed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Gaurab Mahat of the District Police Office, Darchula.

Police said the murder was allegedly planned by Saud, who was also a neighbour of the deceased. Nath is believed to have assisted him in carrying out the crime.

Stolen jewellery weighing approximately two tolas has been recovered from the accused, DSP Mahat said.

Police records show that Saud had previously served an 11-month prison sentence in a theft case, while Nath had completed a four-month jail term.

Authorities further revealed that both suspects were involved in drug abuse.

During interrogation, both men reportedly confessed to the crime.

Police said further investigation into the case is ongoing.
