Zero tolerance for code violations; silent period begins midnight March 2
The Election Commission announced that the 15-day campaign period will begin at midnight on Falgun 3.
KATHMANDU: Preparations for Nepal’s upcoming House of Representatives election on March 5 have entered their final stage.
The Election Commission announced that the 15-day campaign period will begin at midnight on Feb 15.
According to Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, political parties and candidates can hold rallies, public meetings, and other campaign activities only until midnight of March 2, after which a “silent period” will start.
During this time, all election-related activities, discussions, or informal lobbying are strictly prohibited.
Bhandari also emphasized that political parties must open separate bank accounts for election expenses.
Candidates are required to submit detailed expenditure reports for stage setups and public meetings either personally or through their representatives.
Voluntary financial contributions must comply with the Political Parties Act, 2073.
The commission has strictly prohibited the use of government resources or personnel by federal or provincial authorities during the campaign. To ensure compliance, central and district-level monitoring committees have been activated.
Most political parties have already submitted their manifestos or commitment documents to the commission, with some still in process ahead of Sunday night’s deadline.
These documents, Bhandari said, represent both the legal and moral obligations of the parties and outline plans for governance and development.
The commission appealed to staff, security personnel, observers, and voters to help ensure free, fair, and fearless elections.
