KATHMANDU: Vice President of Nepal, Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, has emphasized the urgent need for collective efforts to promote climate-resilient development and reduce the impacts of climate change.

Addressing a program held in Kathmandu, Vice President Yadav stated that although Nepal’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is negligible, it is among the countries most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.

Highlighting that approximately 45 percent of Nepal’s total land area is covered by forests and about 23 percent is designated as protected areas, he underscored the critical role of forest conservation in purifying the environment, mitigating climate impacts, and absorbing harmful carbon emissions.

He warned that rising global temperatures caused by climate change could accelerate the melting of the Himalayas, which would severely impact millions of lives. “Protecting the Himalayas requires a unified and coordinated global effort,” he said.

The Vice President also called for increased access to international climate finance to support adaptation, mitigation, and environmental conservation initiatives within Nepal.

He emphasized the need for stronger financial mechanisms to address climate-related challenges.

Yadav noted that Nepal’s fragile geography makes it particularly susceptible to climate-induced disasters and highlighted the severe decline in groundwater levels across the Terai-Madhesh region as a direct consequence of climate change.

He concluded by calling on national and international stakeholders to come together to safeguard Nepal’s natural resources and ensure sustainable development for future generations.
