KATHMANDU: Veteran Indian actor Achyut Potdar, widely recognized for his iconic role as the stern professor in the blockbuster film 3 Idiots, passed away on Monday, Aug 18, 2025, at the age of 91.

He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, Mumbai, following heart-related complications.

Dr. Ravindra Ghawat, Director of the Critical Care Department at the hospital, confirmed that Potdar was admitted in critical condition with breathing and heart issues around 4 p.m. and passed away at 10:30 p.m.

He had been suffering from high blood pressure and weak cardiovascular health.

Early Life and Career

Born on August 22, 1934, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Potdar grew up in Indore and excelled academically, securing a first position in his economics major in 1961.

He initially served as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, before joining the Indian Army in 1962.

After retiring as a captain in 1967, he worked with Indian Oil for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1992.

Despite his corporate career, Potdar nurtured a passion for acting, participating in theatrical ventures and plays during his tenure at Indian Oil.

Entry into Cinema

Potdar began his film career at the age of 44 and quickly became a familiar face in Bollywood, renowned for his versatility in supporting roles.

His notable film appearances include Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator. On television, he also left a lasting impression in shows such as Bharat Ek Khoj, Wagle Ki Duniya, and Majha Hoshil Na.

Tributes from the Film Industry

The news of Potdar’s passing has elicited heartfelt tributes from colleagues and fans alike. Actor Aamir Khan, who starred alongside him in 3 Idiots, expressed his grief, calling Potdar “an amazing actor, a wonderful human being, and a great colleague” and added, “We will miss you Achyut ji.” Actor Boman Irani referred to him as “a true gentleman and a memorable artist,” sharing a still of Potdar from 3 Idiots on social media.

Director Hansal Mehta also remembered Potdar warmly, calling it a “privilege” to work with him. Fans continue to recall his iconic “Kehna Kya Chahte Ho” dialogue from 3 Idiots, which became a viral sensation and cemented his legacy in popular culture.

He is survived by his family, and his funeral was held in Thane on Aug 19, 2025.
