UNP to move SC over proportional list dispute
The Election Commission had set Poush 13 and 14 as the deadline for submitting proportional representation closed lists.
KATHMANDU: The Ujyalo Nepal Party (UNP) is preparing to approach the Supreme Court, demanding the right to submit its closed list for the proportional representation category of the House of Representatives election.
According to party leader Jitram Lama, the UNP will file a writ petition only after receiving an official decision from the Election Commission. “We registered our party to contest the proportional election. We also paid the Rs 50,000 fee and obtained the receipt,” Lama said. “We had applied to submit our list within the correction and withdrawal period. However, the Commission has not yet issued an official decision on our request.”
He added that party representatives are heading to the Election Commission today. “If the Commission accepts our list, that’s fine. If not, we will ask for a written explanation stating why it was rejected. Based on that letter, we will move the court,” Lama said.
The Election Commission had set Poush 13 and 14 as the deadline for submitting proportional representation closed lists.
However, on Poush 14, the UNP reached an agreement with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), under which some UNP candidates were included in the RSP’s proportional list.
Before that agreement was formally scrapped, the UNP had already applied to submit its own separate list. The Commission rejected the application, citing the expiration of the deadline.
Following this, the UNP has again approached the Commission, seeking an official decision.
The party says it will head to the Supreme Court if the Commission refuses to accept its list, armed with a written explanation of the rejection.
