United Gen Z to protest again at Maitighar after police crackdown
The call for renewed protests comes a day after police intervention and detentions during Monday’s peaceful demonstration, which organizers say has further fueled public anger.
KATHMANDU: The United Gen Z Movement, which has taken to the streets protesting against the government and demanding good governance, has announced another strong demonstration at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu today (Tuesday).
The call for renewed protests comes a day after police intervention and detentions during Monday’s peaceful demonstration, which organizers say has further fueled public anger.
According to a press statement issued by movement coordinator Miraj Dhungana and commander Sunil Singh, protesters will gather at Maitighar at 11:00 am for what they describe as a peaceful but powerful protest. The statement strongly objects to the police’s use of force during Monday’s demonstration.
The United Gen Z Movement has condemned the Sushila Karki–led government, accusing it of suppressing peaceful protests and unlawfully detaining demonstrators. “Several protesters were injured when force was used against a peaceful movement,” the statement reads. It adds that while detained protesters were later released following public pressure, the government’s “repressive approach” has only strengthened and further organized the movement.
What are the demands?
Under the banner of the ‘Garikhan Deu’ campaign, protesting youths have declared the government’s 100-day performance a failure.
They argue that the country should not be pushed toward immediate elections without first ensuring good governance, placing the formation of an all-party government as their central demand.
The protesters have also called for fundamental changes to the existing governance system, demanding a roundtable conference or a constitutional reform assembly to initiate the rewriting of the constitution.
During Monday’s protest, demonstrators including Rabikiran Hamal and Nicholas Bhusal were seen holding placards reading, “Gen Z’s demand is not elections, it is good governance.”
Organizers say today’s demonstration will remain peaceful but warn that continued suppression of civic dissent could escalate the movement further in the coming days.
