A meeting of the party’s Regional Coordination Committee held late Sunday night unanimously recommended Basnet as the sole candidate, party sources said.
Senior leader Rajendra Rajthala and youth leader Anil Shrestha had also staked their claims for the ticket.
However, both leaders later withdrew their candidacies in the interest of ensuring the party’s victory and streamlining the recommendation process, paving the way for a unanimous decision in Basnet’s favor.
Following the decision, former minister Basnet took to social media to express gratitude to his colleagues for their gesture. “I sincerely thank experienced leader Rajendra Rajthala and energetic youth leader Anil Shrestha for withdrawing their claims to facilitate the process of unanimously recommending my name as the sole candidate,” he wrote
