KATHMANDU: Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Parubiy, a prominent nationalist politician and former speaker of parliament, was shot dead on Saturday in the western city of Lviv in what authorities described as a “carefully planned” attack.

The gunman fled the scene and remains unidentified, with investigators noting that the attacker appeared to be “well-prepared.”
Emergency medics arrived swiftly, but Parubiy, 54, succumbed to his injuries before they could provide treatment, according to Lviv regional military administration chief Maksym Kozytskyi.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the killing, calling it a “carefully planned, horrific murder” in a social media statement.
Reuters footage showed forensic experts and police working at the scene, with Parubiy’s body visible on the ground alongside a bag and a pair of glasses.
European leaders expressed shock and condolences. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said she was “deeply shocked by the horrific assassination,” while officials from Estonia and Poland also paid tribute to the slain MP.
Parubiy had been active in Ukrainian politics since 1990, during the collapse of the Soviet Union.
e co-founded the Social-National Party of Ukraine in 1991, though later distanced himself from the group.
He had served continuously as a member of parliament since 2007.
