Turkey reach World Cup after 24-year wait
The win marks Turkey’s return to football’s biggest stage since their impressive third-place finish in 2002.
KATHMANDU: Turkey have secured a place at the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, edging past Kosovo 1–0 in a decisive play-off match.
The win marks Turkey’s return to football’s biggest stage since their impressive third-place finish in 2002. They will now compete in Group C alongside Australia, Paraguay and co-hosts the United States.
The crucial goal came in the 53rd minute in Pristina. Kerem Aktürkoğlu tapped in from close range after Orkun Kökçü’s initial effort—set up by Kenan Yıldız—proved too weak to beat the goalkeeper.
Kosovo created several chances, particularly in the first half, when Turkish goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır denied Fisnik Asllani’s strike. Despite continued pressure, they were unable to find an equaliser.
Turkey managed just one other shot on target but held firm to secure their third World Cup appearance.
The victory also ends a disappointing run of five consecutive failed qualification campaigns. Four years ago, Turkey fell short in the play-off semi-finals against Portugal.
Although Turkey impressed during the group stage, they finished three points behind Spain and were forced into the play-offs, where they ultimately booked their place.
Led by star players such as Arda Güler and Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Turkey currently sit 23rd in the FIFA world rankings—55 places above Kosovo.
For Kosovo, the defeat brings heartbreak. The nation, which only joined FIFA and UEFA in 2016, was on the verge of a historic first World Cup appearance. However, their dream remains unfulfilled for now.
