Thapa urges govt to act on climate disaster preparedness
Thapa highlighted that South Asia is among the most vulnerable regions to challenges posed by climate change.
KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary and Member of Parliament Gagan Kumar Thapa has emphasized the need for the government to be accountable in preparing for climate-induced disasters.
Addressing the opening session of the Hindu Kush Himalayan Parliamentarians’ meeting today, Thapa highlighted that South Asia is among the most vulnerable regions to challenges posed by climate change.
He pointed to recent climate events in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh as evidence of a growing climate crisis in the region and stressed the importance of timely preventive measures.
Referring to recent floods and landslides in Pakistan and other climate-related disasters across the region, Thapa said these events serve as a serious reminder of the urgent threat.
“We can assess cross-border risks, share information and knowledge. We can no longer remain silent in reducing climate-induced crises,” he stated.
Thapa also underlined the need to continue such climate dialogues in the future.
“Let’s sustain parliamentary debates and dialogues,” he said, emphasizing the crucial role of lawmakers in bringing climate issues into the national mainstream. He added that knowledge of climate adaptation collected at the community level should be integrated into national policy formulation and implementation.
